New guy here. Freshening up a Mac 91B1 for our Hornet enduro. Need to know what rattle can paint will come close to Mac yellow and the crinkle black on the shroud. I'm sure this has been talked about before but couldn't find it. Thanks for the help!

I have been using Rustoleum Sunburst Yellow.
It is kinda finicky with recoats. If you try to add a coat after one hour and less than 48 hours, you will be starting over! I have been meaning to try the same color in a regular can - not in a rattle can.
I used Krylon wrinkle paint, but I can't find it anymore, so just ordered some from VHT.

I was curious if two competitors really had the same color name.  Here's what I found:
Krylon (part of the Sherwin-Williams empire) has "Sun Yellow."
Rust-Oleum (part of RPM Brands) has "Sunburst Yellow."

No doubt Karl and Terry have actually repainted Macs, and I have not.

However, I've had very good success with VHT paints.  As long as you follow the bake-out instructions on the can, they have excellent resistance to chemicals and heat.  (They make several different types, so spend a few minutes on their website to make sure you're picking the best type for your application.)

Look at VHT's SP128 (Gloss Yellow) and see what you think.
http://www.vhtpaint.com/high-heat/vht-engine-enamel

SP128 is supposedly good up to 550F and has "excellent durability and superior heat and chemical resistance" and is "specially formulated to withstand corrosion, rust, salt spray, chemicals and additives of today's gasoline blends and degreasers."

I'm pretty sure they also have the black wrinkle paint you'll need.

Brad, be sure to upload pics and let us know what you decide to go with, ok?

Doug

Interesting... we poach stuff from the chainsaw guys, and in the 2nd link, you'll see that they poach stuff from us, too!

Wow! Thanks for all the quick help. Will keep you posted on results. This is the first time I've been inside a Mac in 47 years, and its like I stepped into a time machine. The only thing I remember different is the heads on the rod bolts. Didn't they used to be allen bolts. What's up there? I love it.
As far as the crossover with the chainsaw guys, my dad used to do port work and alky carb conversion for the competition saw guys in our area back in the day. They loved it!

Although a lot of people use black wrinkle finish paint on their Mac outer shrouds, the originals didn't use wrinkle finish paint. They used a flat black spatter finish paint commonly called trunk paint (back then).
