You know later years it was narrowed again. the first answered when Rupp started with the narrow hoop.

I remember reading that Rupp started producing the A-Bone with the narrow steering hoop in 1968.

(That was the same year I started 1st grade... so I'm not working from first-hand knowledge on this one.)

I think that the Brand-X had it much earlier (Gary Wlodarsky would know, since he has one).

Also, the version made for Sears had the narrow hoop in 1963 (thanks Rob V and Bob K):
