Hello, quick question for you all. i have a set of hands wheels for my 61 fox and i know the 4" fronts had a timken bearing/race setup (when i got mine there were no bearings in the wheels). I would like to run a flanged stepped sealed bearing instead. Have any of you done this and where have you sourced the bearings from? Any info/help highly appreciated!
Thanks!
Andy

Not all Hands wheels used tapered roller bearings. 5/8" ball bearings were available as well. Dig around in McMaster Carr, and perhaps you can find a ball bearing that'll adapt. The tapered roller is every bit as good as a ball bearing, so get some of those if you can't find a ball bearing. If you need to step down to fit a 5/8" axle, a piece of properly sized tubing will do very well. I always pack tapered rollers with black moly MP grease for less friction. TJ

andy ... first thing you have to no .!!! this is how i do ..it but i wouldnt say its 100% good idea .. seems a high percent of vintage wheels were 3/4" taper and then turned later to mostly 5/8ths so i have few wheels layin around and good supply of 5/8ths bearings ...i have infact put 5/8ths flaneged bearings in a 3/4" taper race they seem to center them selfs right up works perfect ..now like i say this is just me but to answer your question .. its yes .. i have blitz kart i raced few times go power wheels i stuffed 5/8ths bearings in it .. im also very cheap and if i have somethin layin around ill spend 3 hours tryin to make it work befor i go buy somethin proper ..

if those rims are in good shape i have a set i'd trade with the 5/8 bearings.
you'd have to cover both shippings as i'm pretty broke right now.
my daughters car insurance set me back nearly $3000.00.

Hey, Dave! Sounds like you need to trade in your daughter, or your insurance company! 3K for insurance is outrageous! TJ

Ted (Fred) - so glad to see the name fix!! When did that happen?
Could be Dave's daughther has had a ticket or 2 or maybe a wreck (I hope not). Auto insurance for kids is higher than camel b---s. It may also have something to do with the state in which he lives as each state has different rates. Of course, you probably know that. Sterling

Best of luck, Dave. I think the insurance biz is one big racket.
Sterling, Kevin Gagne fixed the name thing a day or two ago. It just works better! TJ
