I've got an old chrome bubble tank that had gas set in it for a long time and thickened up. What is the best way to clean this gunk out, so I can use the tank again?
Thanks,
Bob Alexander

I use lacquer thinner. Acetone and MEK should also work well. Last night I just had to flush out a gas tank on an older Seadoo that had been sitting outside dying for the last three years. A huge buildup of thick brown varnish and slow pouring gasoline left in tank. This stuff sure stinks.

Ok, I have the tank cleaned out, now what can I use to get rid of the small amount of surface rust on the inside of the tank. Thanks...

pretty sure you can use muriotic acid and some rattlers like old nuts.
i think thinning it a little wouldn't hurt.
be careful it is acid.

Hi Guys,
The safest way to clean rusty tanks is using Evaporust. You can buy it at Autozone and other parts stores. It is safe, won't bother your hide and will not harm paint. Works like a charm on rust. Just finished cleaning a nasty well rusted Bridgestone motorcycle tank. Looks like new inside.
Good luck

Would not use muratic on anything with chrome, will ruin it where it touches, and you may have pinholes closed with a little rust. Evaporust is the way to go. Also if you have minor rust on nthe chromes, wash it to remove dirt and grit and rub VERY hard with a wad of aluminim foil. Follow up with a good polish -- miracle!

What ever happened to using the old shake up some nuts and bolts routine? Everybody has a container of semi-worthless hardware. Just pour it in, shake while turning, and pour it out. This costs nothing. It worked on old motorcycle tanks.

Fill the tank to the top with water and add 1/3 box of baking soda. Then you put anthing that cannot conduct electricty across the fill opening. I use a wooden dowel. wrap a piece of wire to that and dangle a cadium bolt into the solution. Hook the positive cable of a trickle charger to that(remember be sure it cannot contact the tank) and hook the negitive to the tank. Let sit for a day and a half. The bolt will be covered with rust and the inside of the tank will be black oxide like a black bolt. flush out when done and then put some Acetone inside as it mixes with water and dump out and blow dry.

Did not have good results with Muratic acid. Any bare metal in the surrounding 8 blocks rusted over. Actually knew a Midas shop owner cleaned all of his old prebent exhaust pie inventory with Muratic acid. All of it turned out awesome. The next day tho, everything in the whole shop was rusted over.
I have done some older tractor tanks using phosphoric acid. Sold at Home Depot as concrete cleaner. Its in a one gallon plastic jug and acid is green. (Also works well for Parkerizing AK -47 builds) Poured in tank diluted 50% or anything you like then add aquarium rocks. Leave out in the sun and shake occasionally. Usually a day or two. The inside of tank will be pickled and clean.Last edited on Tue Jun 19th, 2012 09:02 pm by Terry Bentley

I've used Evaporust and a pack of BB's. Gave it a good shaking and it came out great.
I've heard of the oldtimers doing something similar by jacking their truck up and bailing wire binding the tank to the inside of the wheel and letting it run for a while. I have too many kids and such running around and wouldn't dream of doing something like that.

theres some way you can use mollassas to.
steves way is the best.
murotic acid and evoporust are same i think except evoporust is cut to about 10% acid solution.
any acid bath needs to be cleaned and then oiled right away forgot that.
actually any method is leaving unoxidized steel which will scale over pretty fast.
i just pour in some kart mix add a little extra caster and shake .
generally i avoid badly rusted tanks as they tend to pin hole pretty quick.
if you're not sure add some air and dunk tank looking for leaks.
