Hi Robert,
I will see your Craigslist Cobra and raise you an unknown enduro:
VINTAGE ENDURO RACING GO CART - $400 (KISSIMMEE)
Date: 2012-02-10, 6:17PM EST
Reply to: mj7x4-2845285078@sale.craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]
Vintage enduro racing go cart from the late '70s to mid '80s. No engine or exhaust. Needs restored, but has never been wrecked. It was originally set up with McCulloch racing engine and I have the motor mounts for them. I was going to install a Yamaha KT 100 engine on it but never got around to it. I think the person i bought it from said it was made by Competition Karts. He claims to have done over 100 mph at Daytona with it back in 1984. I had it running at one time and did a few laps on it til I blew the dry rotted tires. Also includes the engine starter which works fine. Just needs engine and exhaust, new tires, and rebuild the brakes and a little TLC.
Asking $400 or best reasonable offer. Call Dan 407-591-9369
- Location: KISSIMMEE
- it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

PostingID: 2845285078
This is not my ad, just something I found cruising the list in FL.
Kind Regards, Joe

Wow Joe that looks to be worth the extra $100 over the one here for those who run the vintage enduros even if we don't know what brand it is. Maybe someone "raise" with a $500 Hartman!

Thew seat cover is Kobra style around 1973 . I have one and the pix out of a buyers guide to date it .
A pic of the motor mount would help with the ID

So what is the concensus on the Elite? Would this be too new to run the vintage classes at Daytona? Is it a decent handling kart? Thinking about going to look at it. What should I pay attention to? Brad
James I haven't forgotten, just haven't mailed it yet.....

It is a nice kart It should be eligible for a Vintage kart at Daytona. It looks like a early Elite. The earlier Elite was called a Shark, who sold their company to Elite if I remember right. I wish I was closer to it. SCOTT

Thanks Scott
I'll try to take a look at it this week. If it looks good, it might just get a Scott Sigafoos engine to push it around at the big D. Thanks..... Brad

Heck Brad, why wait until Daytona? Come run with us at Savannah. We go by more of the "Classic" rules structure than vintage. This kart would fit right in our 25yr or older rules structure.

Brad,
Hello. Regarding the Elite. If you can remove the master cylinder there will be a 3 digit number stamped into the tab. I can identify the first owner and date of manufacture. Scott is correct that Shark karts were purchased by Van Gilder and the name changed to Elite karts (1979). This one looks like an Elite due to the configuration of two lower steering shaft supports. Will be glad to answer any other questions. Good luck buying the kart.

FYI..Vintage Enduro is more flexible than you would think, no body work is the main factor, and if it looks vintage no one will call you on it, the rules are pretty much non-existent. They typically have classes for american and foreign vintage powered karts.

Hey Marc, the chassis number looks like it's 031. Single engine sidewinder, top-hat and cane on the headrest, no front brakes, HA 175 rear caliper, 1 inch rear axel. It also has a Hegar Mystery axel clutch. Are these any good? Clutch shoes look good. What kind of wheels are correct? Thanks to all for the support. Brad

I run the Hegar Mystery clutch with my B-Bomb, have been running it in vintage events since 2001 and never had a clutch issue.

Hi Brad.
031 was built in 1981 and was originally sold to Ben Ray Griffith (Griffith Specialties). They sold Elite karts. It was crashed early on, then returned and repaired at the factory. It changed hands and was campained mostly in New Hampshire (NHKA) at Bryar Motorsort Park by Mark Good.
The original wheels were most likely VAN-K. They look correct in the photo. The top hat and cane was the Elite logo. Very few headrests had the logo on it. No front brakes was the standard in those days. The 175H/A is probably original. I can agree with Rick about the Mystery Clutch being a good clutch. It is durable and easily adjustable. If you have any questions during the restoration don't hesitate to contact me.

Thanks Marc
Kind of amazing to get this much info on a kart. The guy I bought it from never raced it. He bought it from a guy he worked for at one time. Said it ran with a Mac that he sold on Ebay a few years back. It supposedly raced Daytona a few times. The seller said that the guy he bought it from sent it back to the factory every year for refurb. Anyway it looks pretty straight and original and has a new home in Orlando with a couple of Margay room-mates. I don't know when I'll get started on restoration. The other two were first in line. I'll probably try to find some front brakes for it in case I ever run my B-Bomb on it. The front bumper needs chrome, as does the rear. Other than that just paint and polish and bearings. Thanks for the info Marc. I'll let you know how this progresses.
Regards
Brad

Marc,
Are you able to get info on any Elite kart? I've been running an Elite enduro the past 2 years at Mid Ohio in the Vintage class and the serial number on it is 0489.
Thanks!
Keelie

Hi Keelie,
I currently have numbers up to 347. I will look in my stuff to see if I have copies of the later numbers. I will get back to you in a day or two.
