Hey Kelly,
I was thinking about what karts I have and thought you would like to see this kart. Here is another possible seat idea.
When Steve Miller saw pics of this kart last year, he said the seat reminded him of a P-51 gunner bucket. I thought it looked like a 1959 Bugeye Sprite seat or like what the 1950s and 60s formula one and racing sports cars used for seats.
I have no idea what brand this kart is, but it has had its share of mods over the years. It is one of my favorite karts.
Kind Regards, Joe

When I started looking around at the vintage karts, I saw that one a while back too. That's the same general stance I just love. That seat idea rules and I might go with something like that. Thanks for showing me this.

Cool, thanks. I have a few older fiberglass seats around but none will work right for this. I'm going for a certain look but haven't quite figured it out yet.
I'll show a pic or progress when I've got it right. It'll be unique.
Thanks.

A huge thanks to Joe and a little deal we made, a surprise box on my doorstep greeted me when I got home from work yesterday.
I guess I could have gone the route of getting new parts for this, but the used stuff just has so much character and fits my project perfectly.
Thanks Joe, hope you enjoy your package that should be there by now or very soon.
Now a question: What awesome carb will go on this old beast?

Kelly .have you thought about where your going to mount your master cyl. have you ever seen the ones that master is mounted real close to caliper and you have long rod from pedal and really short plastic hose ..seems old karts look better with two long controll rods ..every kart i own gets stainless 1/4" round rods polish them like chrome and 20 foot piece is only 11.88 plus tax ..unless you was thinking cable for throttle and mounting cyl close to pedal but that always looks modern to me ..either way they will stop you real good and so far looks like there fitting pretty nice ..have fun and you will be riding it soon ill bet ..

Yup!
The master cyl will be about 6-8 inches in front of the caliper with a short tube. I have the original throttle & brake rods from the frame.

Ok, so the racing season is over here and time to get back to my project. I don't have a garage and have had it in storage for the summer while we raced karts.
Brought it back to the house & started to work on it some more. Time for a seat & some side plate thingies.
Brakes & steering after that. I'm gonna drive this before winter hits.

Hey Kelly!
Wow! Back to the project. I have been wondering when you were going to work on it some more. Let me know iffin you need more parts. I look forward to seeing it completed.
I am getting a couple of 1" ID blueprinted carbs shipped to me as we type. One of those would look great on your four stroke. The carbs are set up to run on alcohol and have a polished aluminum filter cup. It looks like jewelry. I will send you a photo when I get them.
Kind Regards, Joe

Thanks!
There is one thing I'm looking around for.
I'm looking for a fuel tank that's, well, like a round tube type of thing, preferably clean & usable. About 9-12" in long by 4-6" wide. I could go with the normal half moon thing on the seat, but my ride calls for a little keg looking thing. Like a coffee can, but smaller.
Anyway, more soon.

kelly glad to here from you i was thinking maybe the wife banned you from spending time in the car port ..you can find them round tanks kinda easy sometimes ..but you sure the heck never stand a chance on ebay ..its insane what they bring ..ill buy an old roto tiller or mower whatever just to get the little round tanks ..yard sales ..swap meets ..i have scored 2 or 3 from salvo,s .. and you can get brand new ones at tractor supply there for bug sprayers .

I thought I'd give a little update on my project.
I got down to sketching out the frame, measuring everything and all angles in preparation to remake it into something a bit better than it originally was. This old frame is 1" tubing with 3/4" for the hoop, etc. The original is really being used to build a completely new one.
The plan is to make 2 new frames where 1 1/4" is used and 1" for the hoop, etc. A local ninja welder is ready to help me do it as well. The front end will change to be more of a racer rather than the nearly straight up & down kingpins it currently has. It's gotta "kick" when I turn and the current bug fun kart front end doesn't exactly do that. My welder has made frames before and although I can "gorilla weld" with my 220... I think it'd be a little too much... and his talents are superior.
The 1st one will end up with 5" wheels all around and only one motor mount. The 2nd one will be nearly identical except it will have a slightly different configuration in the rear end... possibly a 2nd vertical mounting position for the axle. It'll use 6" wheels and have 2 motor mounts.
Luckilly, I've turned up some 6" manco wheels which adds to the look I was going for. Now, to my knowledge, Manco made literally thousands & thousands of these wheels. They came in 4" (for front only), 5" (for live axle or dead), then 6" ones. I'm told the 6" ones only came on mini-bikes. Furthermore, they only came as wheels that took bearings then you'd bolt the sprocket to it. There were no "keyed" live axle versions of them that I am aware of. What I find funny is that, in my search; a lot of folks love to brand these babys as "rare." I don't think they are.
Anyway, to make the 6"halves work for the rear, we'll whip up some inserts for them which will fit into the bearing area and have a 3/4" center hole... then bolt each half to a standard inner hub/wheel half that's keyed... paint 'em up just like I did with my other ones and we should have a neato lookin ride. Hm... I wonder if 6" tri-star inner halfs would work... Anyone got a set of 6" inner halves that can tell me the diameter of the 3 bolt holes used to hold them together? (did that make sense?)
Next, I cleaned out my shed from my many years in the classic boating industry and found two potential gas tanks. One is a tube (looks like a large pill) that's made of stainless steel and in great shape. It came from some british outboard but looks killer. The other looks like it was from a chainsaw or something and could be used too. More on these when I get to it.
Ultimately, the plan is still on track to become what I call "mine." I don't care much that it has "this engine, that type of wheel, this header, that name, blah!" Drawing from the overall appearance of the evans SPL and a few other things, it'll end up being exactly what I wanted... but there'll be 2 of them. One will be Doc Hudson Hornet Blue with some spare red wheels for dirt... and the other is to be determined. Probably 1956 chevy g0ld & white.
And yes, I'm still putting 4 Strokes on them. Probably older punched out tecumsehs because I like the rounded look they have.
Thanks for reading/following along.
Have a good day y'all.

Cool thanks. I've been watching stuff like that but I think I found the right one. Here's a pic of it. it's about 12" long & 4 1/2" in dia. We'll strip the paint & see what we have underneath... looks like stainess to me which will make a nice shiny bullet lookin thing.

Fun fun, time for wheel work! With all the random Manco wheel halves I've been hoarding for the past half a year piling up, I thought I'd get down to some of the clean up work on them.
With Dremel in hand, all different kinds of metal sand paper, steel wool, etc... I took most of yesterday shining up & painting my wheels for these two beasts I'm making.
I lucked out with quite a few NOS pieces... then there were those that probably sat in the back 40 for years... and boy are my hands sore after those basket cases.
Sure, I could probably put them on an axle & just spin them... but there's a certain something about the detail & character you get when doing it by hand.
In the lower left, the 6" ones turned out beautiful.
Thanks for looking.

ha... funny. Yes, my ego. That's it.
Everything needs a good polishing right? They're cheap manco wheels with character so I don't care if they get dirty.
With the engine I've got lined up for her, you'll see nothing but a flash anyway!
If I actually found some special wheels... I might be afraid to drive it. Then I'd just stare at it like so many wood boat enthusiasts polishing their trailer queens.
Nah.
um... what's a shovel-head? You polish your garden tools or something?
