I recently bought this old kart.  It appears to be a manufactured kart from about 1960, not a home-built piece.  It's constructed of 1" square tubing, has dual engine mounts, a Palmini disc brake, and there's evidence it had a seat back mounted fuel tank.  At first glance, it looks like a funky design, but upon closer examination, it's actually not too bad.  The tubing that makes up the seat back also  forms the seat bottom and the forward side rails....all out of a single piece of 1" square tubing.  It slopes down from the seat to the front axle.  I can't seem to attach pictures here, but I can e mail them if you send me your e mail address.  Can  anyone help identify this?

Hi Craig. email me at stevenfryer@sbcglobal.net

It could be an SAE (jackpot for you) or a Rocket Kart also. Send me photos, and I'll try to help. Regards, Steve

It doesn't look like the one in your photo, Ron, but some aspects of the construction are similar.  Or maybe it's just the square tube thing.  If I had more computer saavy, I could post pictures here.......since that's not the case, I can e mail pictures to anyone who thinks they might be able to help.

Craig, Missle Karts were built in the early 60s with square tube in Mo.
Jack Canaday and I were discussing triple engine Missle and Crew Cut karts built in Mo. last week. There were several that raced in Iowa, and a couple of them in Mo. He would probably be able to identify whether it's a Missle Kart. Tom Smith

Thanks to all who responded....I still don't know what the heck this kart is, but I've got a few more names than I started with.  I removed the seat upholstery looking for evidence of a serial number or a tag, but zippo...nadda.  Well, plans are to semi-restore it and have fun with it.  Unless someone out there in vintage kart land is interested in buying it........gimme a holler.  If I ever do figure out who built this kart, I'll post it here so we can add it to our list of tricks.

Hi Tom...I finally got back home from an extended trip back to the midwest, so now I can continue my effort to identify the make of the old square-tube framed kart I bought a while back.  You mentioned Jack Canaday as a possible source of info, but I can't find his email address.  Can you help?  I'm located in Santa Rosa...pretty close to you.  My e mail is csowens@comcast.net
If it's easier to call, my phone is 707-544-1948.  Thanks for any info you can provide.

After talking to Tom Smith and Jack Canaday, I've been able to eliminate the likelihood this kart is a Missle Kart, a Crew Cut Kart, A Cates Kart, or an SAE kart.  It's a distinctive design, and it's definitely a manufactured kart, not a home-built so the answer is out there somewhere.  If I find the answer, I'll post it here, meanwhile if anyone recognizes this orphan, please let me know.  I can e mail pictures.

So, I bought this silly kart from Craig, and now I am trying to identify it.

Can anyone assist?  As has been stated bel;ow, Jerry Solt has convinced me it is not an SAE (though Terry Ives was sure it was).

So what is it?

Dear Vintage Karters,   I have a hunch that what we are looking at here is one of the long lost Nike Karts.  Nikes were made briefly in the early sixties at some location in Toledo, Ohio.  Toledo is just about thirty miles north of Findlay, Ohio, which was and is the home of Jerry Solt and his famous squared-tubed S.A.E. kart.  That close proximity might explain the use of square-tubing and other S.A.E. influences in its construction.  I've often observed that different brand karts which were made in approximately the same geographical area tended to look like the first one to be built in that area, e.g. the Bird and Lil 500 karts and mini-bikes, and the two karts which were built in Evansville, IN, whose names escape me at the moment.  Somebody has got to have a picture of a Nike handy to compare this one with.  Best wishes,  Quentin Haines

Quentin, I have a small picture from a 1961 Karting World magazine ad from the While-Away Products Co, Toledo, Ohio for the Nike Kart. The picture shows a kart with a dropped seat scheme very similar to the picture of the unknown kart and touts the Nike Kart as Exceptionally Light and Extremely Durable.
( wonder how they accomplished that feat when no one else could?) The picture is too small to tell if the frame is square tube but the layout is similar with an under slung rear axle. Two items that are completely different are the pedals and Bexdix Brake on the kart in the ad. I'd say it could well be a Nike Kart, but perhaps an earlier year and model with the Palmini Brake? Tom

Tom,  If it is, in fact, a Toledo-made Nike, one wonders how it ended up on the west coast nearly 50 years later.  Sometimes I wish go-karts could talk as most would have great stories to tell.  JP if you ever get back to the midwest with your Nike and want to sell it, I might be interested in buying it to add to my collection of Ohio-made karts.  So far--and I am in no hurry on this project--I have collected a Century Speed Kart, an S.A.E., a couple early Darts and a very rare Track Rabbit complete with 2 1/2 horsepower Lauson and the two-piece fiberglass body.  Tom, how is the "Duffy's Konig" kart coming along?  A few years ago, shortly after Chuck Balsiger passed away, his son came on this forum and mentioned that the "KART Magazine Special" is still around.  I would love to see you be able to match it up with your Konig special for a re-creation of the "The Greatest Race in the History of Karting."  Best wishes to all.  Quentin

Quentin, I had heard that Balsingers' kart was in Jim Reeses' Collection in Oregon which was purchased by Mark Parker. I asked Parker if he had gotten the kart and he replied that he didn't want it because he couldn't fit in it and so he didn't get the kart. I was speaking to a fellow from Sacramento yesterday that knows Theo and Theo has told him that he has Balsingers and Duffys karts........
I have not finished my Go Kart 800 but Duff says I'm doing it right.
You might call Jim Reese 503 235 2778 days and ask him about the Balsinger kart.
Duffy says he was able to win that race because Beeler jumped the start and ran Duff off into the dirt which caused the Konig to spin the rear wheels up to full power and when he hit the track again he shot into the lead over Balsinger. Neither of those karts could pass the other one on the track.

Time to wake up this old thread, another one just showed up on eBay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Vintage-Go-Kart-Rolling-Chassis-/140517530776?pt=Go_Karts&hash=item20b77f5c98

I guess that pretty much establishes this as a commercially made kart, but why doesn't anyone know what it is?  This one's on the West Coast too, which seems to point towards it being manufactured somewhere out here.
