| I know a few people in Kentucky who would be interested in some 1" margay halves. Also. We may be interested in some pipes but would like to know what is included. Terry

| Dave, I would be interested in the margay wheel halves. I also feel that any repops should be marked as such in some way. Mike

Thanks,

I suppose you are right. Once again, I was talking about things I don't know about. I looked at the Karting Archives site, and now I see how everything works. For some reason, I had a vision of the pipes on a New Breed with the left and right 820's. I hadn't paid much attention to how they work on Macs, sidewinders, or single engines. I should have the old saying tattooed on the inside of my eye lids. "It's better to have people think you are stupid than to open your mouth and prove it." I shut up now.

King Dave, I realize you aren't the manufacturer, but you are the only spokesperson and contact I know of for the manufacturer. I will commit to buying a set. (assuming the price is $400 for a pair) Even if they don't work right, they are great looking show pieces. If I was smart, I'd commit to buying twenty sets, but I can't afford that. I know they will sell. I will also commit to buying several rims of different sizes. I'd especially like to buy two pairs of 4" rims and a bunch of 3". I'll also buy a bunch of 1 1/2".

arrrrrh
boy you guys are kinda dense.
sorry no insult meant by that.
I WON"T BE MAKING THEM!
if production is done again it will be with the original margay dies using the exact same production facility.
get it?
as such i am sure that knowing what was done and what fit what they would be able to make the right parts for the right motor.
BUT it'll never happen unless there's a provable demand and even then there is no promises made by the "interested party".
soooo like i asked originally would anyone want to buy them.
so far all i hear is the crickets from the field it's so quiet.
as far as price there aren't too many around and anytime i see them on esteal they run up past four hundred perfect or not.
these would be complete new and perfect just not old.
i personally would buy a set just for the cool/show factor even if i couldn't actually run them.
dave
p.s. alan if you check out those pages you see they meant them for any kart not just margays.
and if you check out the new breed sidewinder they have it mounted on a foreign motor too.

Dave-
Bear in mind that the Margay advertising from the period illustrates two styles of Ram's horn pipes. One that has a clamp/mount system shown for McCulloch's and another with the more traditional bolt-through the pipe style shown set up for the West Bend.... Performance wise, I don't know how good they were as Margay used the same pipe for both the West Bend 820/620 and the 91/101 series Mac's. I would think that with the differences between those motors that a one size fits all approach wouldn't work so well from a pure performance stand point. That said, they are iconic for the period and the kart. When you see the pipes you immediately think New Breed...BTW, those sucker are LOUD, and seem to cut through even the best 30db NRR earplugs.
Check out the Margay advertising from '64-'69 at the Archives site.
The ads are on pgs. 21 & 23.

After further investigation, I see that they were kind of designed for gearbox karts. They would be cool on just about any dual engine kart. I was talking / asking about things I don't know about because I know about the politics of having parts reproduced. I know the person who makes the part wants to know that they won't be wasting time and money remaking the parts. I only have one kart that they would work on, but I'd sure like to see them repopped. I'd almost commit to buying a set on speculation / hope of getting a New Breed in the future. I am sure that anyone who is missing anything would buy individual parts and anyone with one side that is wadded up would buy a replacement. Might be nice to have a set to run without having to worry about cracking or denting them. Hopefully a few karters will speak up or they will never be available. No response is saying "I don't want them to be made." On the flip side, it would be helpful to know what you get for $400. If you get two pipes, it sounds like a real good deal. If you get two pipes, headers, and the mounting brackets, even better. If you only get one pipe, not so good.

to answer your question about the pipe.
they were a pipe just like all the others so they'd fit anything you bolted it to i guess.
i don't have any knowledge about how good they were but margay was/is a fast company so i'd guess they were pretty good.
the main thing is they're extremely cool.
anyway if this happens it'll be the original company making exact parts off original dies but they won't even consider it unless alot more interest is shown .
if it happens i'll gain nothing but a new parts source.

Hey King Dave, go ahead and send me the stuff, I'll find something else to give you a hard time about. Don't worry about that.

Hey Dave, I'm sure you could sell the rims as fast as you make them at $25. I think POS used ones go for that. If you figure all the time you spend sanding and polishing to make used ones look new, $25 is cheap. Were the rams horn pipes just for the New Breed's? I'd imagine they probably wouldn't work on a sidewinder, but would probably work on a King and most other rear karts. I know just about anyone who has a New Breed and some King guys would pony up the money for the pipes. Seems kinda necessary to have those pieces.

| Dave, Yes, any reproduction should have at least a date stamped. Even if it's on the inside so only the owner knows. At least when it comes to resale, the new buyer would know not to pay NOS price. We've collected gas pump globes for years and the good repops, done by ppl with integrity, have a date on them. John

i happened to have a conversation with someone.
the idea of making a new issue of margay star rim halves and rams horn pipes came up.
this person is well aware of current ebay prices and such.
his concerns about reproducing the rims and pipe is about quantity and damaged value to n.o.s. vintage parts that are already out there.
these parts would be of the original dies and would be exactly the same as surviving new old stock parts.
so i was agreed to post a few questions.
first if they were produced would anyone have a problem with something stamped on the new parts to preserve the integrity of the n.o.s. parts?
would those people wanting the new parts be willing to put the money up in a escrow fund pre-production to guaranty a set amount of sales to fund tooling set up costs?
finally pricing:
would $400 for a brand new rams horn pipe off the original dies to original factory specs be a price you'd be willing to pay?
For the star rim halves is $25 per rim half a price you'd be willing to pay?
These questions are not in any way something i'll have any direct involvement in other than obtaining answers for an interested party.
There is no promise implied or otherwise that this will actually happen but the interested party would like an idea of product demand.
I suppose the possibility of new parts will or won't move forward depending on the answers to these questions.
